bike theft in NYC is a pretty big problem. i’m glad that i went with kryptonite’s “fahgettaboudit” chain lock shortly after i bought my bike. however, over the months i’ve come to realize that the chain lock is a bit of a nuisance to carry around if i’m wearing a bag. i can really only carry it one way – across my shoulder. some people can wear it around their waist, but i’m not that skinny. anyway, i’ve finally gotten my hands on the mini U-lock by the “fahgettaboudit” name. it is perfect. the only drawback is that i can’t wrap it around as many objects as i could with the chain. but it’ll go perfectly around any street sign or bike rack in the city while securing my rear wheel and seat tube.
along with the U-lock i also got myself a holster for it. i know that sounds sorta dorky, but when i saw it i thought it was pretty well done. before i stumbled across this, i was just planning on carrying the lock in my bag. the u-lock is a rigid shape, unlike the chain which would just bunch up in a clump in my bag, so i would’ve been able to deal with this. but this makes carrying this lock even easier. it’s made by fabric horse, a small company in cincinnati, ohio that makes sewn goods. this holster was made from seatbelts pulled from junk yards. that in itself is sorta neat!
anyway, check it!
